Gee Thanks Apple – Made $7 Today

I was one of the first to tout how great the Appstore was and how much income could be made during the early appstore gold rush. I documented the great opportunity that Apple had given us.

I recommended that developers get on board, it was a great ecosystem. Money to be made, and it was pretty secure income too.

In the last year, the company I work for has earned a lot, and has been making a solid ~$500 a day which is funding development of our next App. (called Blabr and totally SFW – so no chance Apple will hit it with the Ban Hammer)

I’m now worried…
The ecosystem is run by puritans
The ecosystem is not fair to all players
The ecosystem is run by hypocrites

And worst of all it is NOT a secure source of income – as you can see below – it can drop to bloody close to zero if they “decide to change the rules”

I’m not the only one that is worried – I’ve been contacted by other devs who are scared to speak out, lest Apple decide to not pay them!!

It’s OK for Apple to Use Sex to Sell?

Lets be clear – Wobble shipped with no content.

For the record,  I don’t think adult apps have a place in the appstore, unless the rating system works and the content can be properly blocked – icons and all, as if they never existed – from people that don’t want to see this stuff. I’d block it from my kids iPods and leave it unblocked on mine, and ignore it if I wanted to…

However, a couple of people have supported Apples view that bikinis should be removed (!) from the Appstore altogether – this is a hypocritical stance from Apple and I’ll tell you why… Apple use sex to sell their own products!

From a “corruption of children’s minds” perspective – how does this image:

differ from this one:

wobble-ad-itunes-v01

They both highlight a woman’s breasts, and they both use sex to sell – the top image is how Apple portray themselves in their own advertising.

iPod in Classroom? ahem.

One of the arguments I’ve seen around the interwebs for Apples daft decision is that Apple wants to make the Appstore child friendly so they can get the iPad into classrooms.

I’m sorry, but this is hogwash

1. The Playboy app is still there.

2. What teacher in their right mind would allow any student to look at the appstore as part of a lesson?!

If iPads or iPods were ever to be used in a school as a textbook or whatever, then the use would be tightly controlled, and the Appstore would be blocked from even opening by students.

Otherwise – can you guess what will happen? The classroom would erupt into a cacophony of farts and machine guns!!

>5000 Apps Banned; The New Rules

UPDATE:  A week of campaigning has paid off – phew – for a while there the world was without an app to jiggle boobs with!

I have spoken with Apple, and the following are the new rules
(Updated rules here in a follow up post):

1. No images of women in bikinis (Ice skating tights are not OK either)

2. No images of men in bikinis! (I didn’t ask about Ice Skating tights for men)

3. No skin (he seriously said this) (I asked if a Burqa was OK, and the Apple guy got angry)

4. No silhouettes that indicate that Wobble can be used for wobbling boobs (yes – I am serious, we have to remove the silhouette in this pic)
PLEASE NOTE: The images below are as strong as our App got – do you call this “overtly sexual”?? I DON’T

wobble-help1-v01b and this one(note old numbers) wobble-ad-itunes-v01

5. No sexual connotations or innuendo: boobs, babes, booty, sex – all banned

6. Nothing that can be sexually arousing!! (I doubt many people could get aroused with the pic above but those puritanical guys at Apple must get off on pretty mundane things to find Wobble “overtly sexual!)

7. No apps will be approved that in any way imply sexual content (not sure how Playboy is still in the store, but …)

Who is Apple Kidding?

The Playboy App has now moved from about 20 to number 10 in the entertainment section. And NOT on the strength of it’s reviews – people HATE this app – most reviews are 1 Star – Wobble had 60% 5 Star ratings – everybody loved it that bought it :-).

Plenty of skin and a bare arse in the screenshots of the Playboy App that is still in the store – see below – these pics break every rule that they have told me about.

What’s the storyApple – have you done a sweet heart publishing deal for a new format Playboy magazine on the iPad??? Don’t want to piss off your new partner??

playboy in appstore

When you start looking there is some pretty weird stuff available in the iTunes Store – in fact some downright disgusting things – if you are easily offended do not even start to look for the obvious search terms in podcasts, I’m not going to go into too much detail but there is some real filth available.

When you compare this stuff to Wobble – which had a silhouette of a woman with 2 targets superimposed – I am STUNNED that Apple has blocked our App.

Look at this stuff – think of a word and do a search – it’s all there:

pussy search on iTunes

porn search in iTunes

Wobble is NOT overtly sexual

WOBBLE SHIPS WITH NO CONTENT AT ALL
Yep, no content – it ships without any pics at all – how can it be overtly sexual, people use their own pics.

To all those that want their apps censored… I have no problems with that really – If Apple decided on a standard and published it we’d be ok… If they stuck to it!!

They have changed their standards, but they don’t actually say what those standards are now, nor what those standards were before! No guidelines provided at all!

There are almost a million people who own the Wobble app, who now cannot get an update if Apple releases a new O/S that breaks the app they OWN. This happened with the update to 3.0 and we released a patch, now we wont be able to do that in the future.

If Apple approved it already and people bought it, why should they be penalized, and more importantly to me – why should we – Glentwood has invested quite some time and money in this app, and it was approved over a year ago!!

Maybe Apple are changing their standards to comply with rules in other countries that they have just opened up their App store to? Maybe we’ll only be able to show a woman if she is wearing a veil??

Apple Censoring ALL non PG Apps

Apple have decided to remove anything that is in the slightest bit non PG. See the email below from Apple – what a nice way to notify developers!!! Shoot first and not ask any questions, typical Apple  arrogance. Just resubmit if you don’t like it, your income stops in the meantime of course, but bad luck.

Roll on WINDOWS PHONE 7, ANDROID – Apple you are completely fith if you think developers are going to take this one without a class action.

As you can see – below is a screenshot from itunes connect showing the app as "removed from sale"

itunes connect screencapture

The dumb thing is that Wobble has no content at all. what is more, there have been no changes to Wobble functionality in about 6-8 months ( a few bug fixes only)

It would seem they are going to be removing a LOT of Apps!!! All those soft core “Asian Babes” and “Naughty Hotties” are going to have to go too?!

See a screenshot of our stats over the last year – it’s not like Wobble isn’t *known* to Apple – they have paid us almost $300,000 more in AUD and it’s been installed 970,000 times (inc the free version)!!

Here’s a screenshot of itunes showing the massive number of reviews and the average rating by users of 4 star:

NOTE – it may still show up in iTunes for another hour or so, it takes a while to update.

UPDATE – Techcrunch have the story

THEIR EMAIL TO ME BELOW:

Dear Glentwood pty ltd,
The App Store continues to evolve, and as such, we are constantly refining our guidelines. Your application, Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored), contains content that we had originally believed to be suitable for distribution. However, we have recently received numerous complaints from our customers about this type of content, and have changed our guidelines appropriately.
We have decided to remove any overtly sexual content from the App Store, which includes your application.
Thank you for your understanding in this matter. If you believe you can make the necessary changes so that Wobble iBoobs (Premium Uncensored) complies with our recent changes, we encourage you to do so and resubmit for review.
Sincerely,
iPhone App Review
